What if...?

I was reading the first part of the Declaration of Independence recently. A thought came to me when I read this part:

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

What if the "Leftists" in the United States have determined that they no longer want the government that our founders created and have decided that they want a new form of government? What if they believe that they would prefer a socialist form of government; that they would be better off under Socialism?
